The AJ Student Prize is highly respected within the architectural community, with nominees representing the best of the next generation of architects. It offers students the chance to have their work exhibited to a wide professional audience, gain industry recognition, and further develop their careers.

Jacob Davies-Hannen’s project is centred around the regeneration of the Welsh industrial town of Merthyr Tydfil, which once boasted the world’s largest ironworks. His design explores the town’s rich industrial history while addressing its post-industrial decline, aiming to revitalise the area by proposing sustainable and culturally sensitive interventions.

Jacob shared his excitement about the nomination, stating, “I’m incredibly honoured to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award. This recognition means a lot to me and reflects all the hard work that’s gone into my project. I’m really grateful to my tutors and colleagues at UWTSD for their support and encouragement throughout this journey.â€

Ian Standen, Programme Director for Architecture at UWTSD, added, “Jacob’s nomination for the AJ Student Prize is a reflection of his creativity and commitment to architectural innovation. The project presented for the nomination clearly shows that Jacob has an innovative approach to preserving historical architecture while also incorporating modern sustainability practices.

There is no doubt that his work embodies the core values of our programme, and we are extremely proud of his achievement.â€
