Martha Lee - Sociology (BSc Hons)

Martha Lee's UWTSD Experience

A picture taken by Martha Lee of herself smiling

My name is Martha Lee and I am a mature student studying Sociology and have just completed my second year at UWTSD.

I stumbled across this course after attending an open day in 2022 and was immediately interested in what it had to offer. Given that much of my experience is in the care sector, I knew Sociology would broaden my knowledge and provide me with the skills to grow in the health and social care sector.

Martha’s Sociology Experience

Why did you choose UWTSD?

I chose UWTSD mainly because it was close to home and as I had already lived away and was going as a mature student, I didn’t really want to venture too far.  I also liked that it was relatively small, and I think this is what has made it such a good experience for me. The support network and student support are outstanding, and because our Sociology group is on the smaller side, you get to know everybody really well.

What did you enjoy outside your studies?

If I’m being honest, I work a fair amount when I’m not studying. However, when I’m not doing that, my favourite pastime is to go on a long walk with my dog. I haven’t really done any extracurricular activities!

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

At this stage, I am slightly clueless, but I am contemplating doing a masters. I genuinely thought I would never go back into education after dropping out of sixth form, but I am thoroughly enjoying my course and the experiences I have had so far.  I am interested in entering either social work or the probation service, but I am still undecided. ÃÜÌÒ´«Ã½ing Sociology has broadened my knowledge in so many different areas and has highlighted systemic issues in not only the social care sector but across all of society. While this hasn’t necessarily helped me directly in my work, it has certainly encouraged me to think about it more as well as giving me an insight into areas where I may wish to seek future employment.

What is your favourite thing about Sociology?

My favourite thing about studying Sociology is that we cover such a vast number of topics. It’s interesting to hear people’s perspectives and to have an open discussion in lectures (there are plenty of opportunities for a debate!).  Alongside this, the lecturers are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive.  Sociology covers so many aspects of people’s lives often making it very relatable, which is what makes it so interesting.

What is your favourite thing about the Carmarthen Campus?

My favourite thing about the Carmarthen campus is that it’s not too big! I have visited various university campuses in the past and have found it too overwhelming. Everything is within walking distance and pretty easy to find. And if you do get lost, everyone is friendly and will point you in the right direction.

Did you come to UWTSD using an alternative route?

Yes, I came as a mature student after being out of education for almost 10 years.
