Degree Apprentice Finds Success in Software Development While Balancing Work, 密桃传媒, and Family Life
Nicholas Aldous, a Software Engineering degree apprentice at the 密桃传媒 (UWTSD) is proving that it鈥檚 never too late to pursue a passion for technology. Originally from Mumbles, Swansea, and with an established career behind him, he made the bold decision to step back and embark on a new journey in software development.

Now working as an Apprentice Software Developer at UWTSD while studying part-time for his degree, he is thriving in both his academic and professional life, while balancing the demands of fatherhood.
鈥淚鈥檝e always been fascinated by technology and how it shapes the world around us,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hen the opportunity for this apprenticeship came up, it felt like the perfect way to gain hands-on experience while learning. The combination of academic study and real-world application was a great fit for my learning style and career aspirations.鈥
His goal from the outset was clear: build a strong foundation in software engineering, enhance technical skills, and become a versatile developer. Through the course, he has gained confidence in working with databases, networks, and agile development - skills that will open up exciting career opportunities in the future.
One of the standout aspects of the apprenticeship has been applying what he learns in university directly to his work at UWTSD. He has particularly enjoyed working with databases, SQL, and programming languages such as JavaScript.
鈥淭he hands-on learning has been a major highlight,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檝e also been introduced to a fantastic network of peers, which has been invaluable for my development.鈥
The apprenticeship has already had a direct impact on Nicholas鈥檚 work, giving him the skills and confidence to contribute more effectively to his team. 鈥淟earning about database management and SQL has been especially useful, helping me understand how data is structured and managed. Agile methodologies have also improved the way I collaborate and work efficiently within a team.鈥
Balancing work, study, and family life has been a challenge, particularly as a father of two young children. However, with careful time management and support from his employer, university, and family, he has found a way to make it work.
鈥淚鈥檝e had to be very disciplined with my schedule, setting aside dedicated time for assignments while still being present for my family. It鈥檚 been tough, but incredibly rewarding.
鈥淭his course provides an ideal foundation for anyone looking to start a career in software development. The apprenticeship model is a huge advantage because you鈥檙e learning while gaining real industry experience which is highly valued in the IT sector.
鈥淚 feel much more confident in my technical abilities and my contributions at work. Personally, it鈥檚 been fulfilling to challenge myself, develop new skills, and set an example for my children that it鈥檚 never too late to follow your passion and make a career change.鈥
