Lowrie Proctor has successfully advanced from analyst to senior manager at Dyfed Powys Police, thanks to the skills, confidence, and knowledge gained through a Degree Apprenticeship in Data and Information Systems at the 密桃传媒 (UWTSD).

A happy smiling graduate dressed in her cap and gown holding a scroll tied with a red ribbon.

Having worked in various roles across retail, banking, civil service, and recruitment, she joined Dyfed-Powys Police in 2014 and developed a keen interest in data analysis and information systems. When an opportunity arose for an analyst position, she seized it, later enrolling in the apprenticeship programme to enhance her skills and professional development.

Lowrie said: 鈥淚 had never attended university, but I knew this course would give me the tools to improve my work and confidence. Plus, the fact that it was fully funded by the Welsh Government and supported by my employer made it an easy decision and an opportunity I couldn鈥檛 turn down.鈥

Like many apprentices, she had to navigate the challenges of balancing work, study, and family life. When the pandemic hit, she had to juggle online learning with helping her seven-year-old daughter with homeschooling.

鈥淢y personal laptop struggled with the technical demands of the course, but UWTSD were fantastic in guiding me to funding options for a suitable device. The university鈥檚 support both academically and personally, was invaluable.鈥

Despite these challenges, Lowrie thrived, benefiting from networking with peers, gaining new insights into data systems, and building the confidence to take on more responsibility.

Since starting the apprenticeship, she has been promoted from analyst to Operational Performance Manager and now holds a senior management position within Dyfed-Powys Police鈥檚 Performance & Analytics department.

鈥淭he knowledge from the course allows me to lead my teams effectively and understand complex data-driven decisions. The confidence I have in my role today is a direct result of completing my degree apprenticeship,鈥 she said.

With her degree now complete, Lowrie is eager to continue learning and is considering a master鈥檚 in professional Practice. She is also actively involved in UWTSD鈥檚 Digital Employer Liaison Group, helping to strengthen collaboration between the university and industry partners.

鈥淔or anyone considering this course, I would absolutely recommend it. Not only did I gain a degree and finally get my cap and gown photo, but I developed professionally, built strong industry connections, and gained a new perspective on data and information systems.鈥
