Lucy chose UWTSD for its unique adventure filmmaking course which perfectly suited her passion for storytelling and outdoor pursuits.

Growing up in the coastal area of Gower, Swansea, she has always been drawn to adventure sports like surfing and rock climbing, and photography became a natural way to capture those experiences.

UWTSD’s BA Adventure Filmmaking course was one of the few of its kind that aligned with her desired career path, and the campus location provided and ideal environment and endless possibilities.

Lucy said:

“UWTSD offered the only adventure filmmaking course I could find. The Carmarthen campus, situated between Gower and Pembrokeshire, is perfect for someone doing this degree as there’s so much around to offer adrenaline junkies and wildlife photographers or filmmakers.

The campus has great facilities linked to this course, like Mac labs, editing suites, as well as an immersive room. It’s also right next door to the S4C headquarters which provides a whole range of opportunities.â€

During her time on the course, Lucy thrived in the dynamic, hands-on experiences that took her far beyond the classroom. From expeditions like sport climbing in Spain to filming on the Welsh coastline with students from UWTSD’s Outdoor Adventure Education programme, she learned to combine her love for the outdoors with the technical skills needed to capture it on camera.

Now a freelance filmmaker, she is carving out an exciting career, creating documentaries for a nature reserve and recently completing a climbing film. Alongside her filmmaking, she works as a coasteering and rock climbing guide, embracing every aspect of the outdoor lifestyle.

Lucy credits her BA Adventure Filmmaking course and lecturers for giving her the skills and confidence to pursue a career in adventure filmmaking.

Lucy said:

“My experiences on the course have led me to work around the UK and shortly in Kalymnos, Greece where I’ll be using these exact skills for an upcoming project.

I’ll most likely be hanging off a 80m cliff with my camera filming an aerial silk artist performing in the air overhanging a climbing crag called Grande Grotta. This project involves a team put together of rock climbers, filmmakers, photographers, rope access experts, and a circus artist performer.’’

Beyond the skills and experiences, the course also introduced her to like-minded adventurers who shared her passions. She found herself surrounded by new friends who become key figures in some of her most memorable moments behind the camera, including the day she captured Seaglass, a photograph that has now been shortlisted for the 2024 British Photography Awards.

“Seaglass, was taken in Llangennith, Gower. It was the last surf of the summer, and we all wanted to make the most of it. The waves were about 3-4 feet, with a perfect offshore breeze creating these glassy waves. I had my underwater camera with me, and luckily for us, it turned out to be one of the best sunsets of the summer.â€

The image, that captures a serene, candid moment as her friend gazed out to sea, is one that she says she will treasure forever as it holds such fond memories.

You can support Lucy by voting for Seaglass at the , and you can enjoy more of her work over on

As she prepares for her upcoming project in Greece and celebrates her nomination for the British Photography Awards, she’s on the verge of an exciting career, one that promises adventure and capturing unforgettable moments through her lens.
