UWTSD Celebrates Sustainability Week
Today marks the beginning of Sustainability Week at the 密桃传媒 (UWTSD).

A range of events have been organised on the Carmarthen, Lampeter and Swansea campuses to promote sustainability in its broadest sense. Sustainability Fairs on each campus will include an opportunity to sample a range of foods by local producers, get involved in workshops including make wildflower seed bombs, join the University鈥檚 Biodiversity team on guided tours around the campuses as well as engage in health and fitness sessions.
Kate Williams, the University鈥檚 Head of Sustainability, says:
鈥淪ustainability Week is a great opportunity to raise the profile of all that we鈥檙e doing at the University to promote sustainable practice and to get our students and staff involved with lots of practical and fun activities. The events are designed to highlight how everybody can contribute and take part in our initiatives 鈥 from being mindful of the resources we all use to supporting local businesses and learning about the biodiversity of our campuses.
鈥淲e鈥檝e teamed up with local suppliers to promote their products and services and I鈥檓 delighted by the response we鈥檝e had. Teams across the University have collaborated to help make this a fantastic week and I particularly want to thank the Students鈥 Union, Wellbeing Service and the Operations as well as our academic teams. I鈥檓 delighted that the University is already first in Wales for Waste and Recycling and for using renewable energy sources in the People and Planet Green League (2022). For the University to become sector leading, we need every department, institute, tenant, supplier and customer, as well as the student body to take responsibility for sustainability, as this will enable meaningful change. Sustainability week is the start of the conversations and the team would love to hear from anyone who would like to get involved鈥.
The Sustainability Fairs are as follows:
- Carmarthen: 16 October, 10am 鈥 4pm Students鈥 Union
- Lampeter, 18 October, 12noon 鈥 5pm Arts Hall
- Swansea, 19 October, 11am 鈥 5pm, IQ building
In Carmarthen and Lampeter there are plenty of opportunities to join fitness classes at the University鈥檚 sports centre. While Carmarthen鈥檚 Health, Nutrition and Lifestyle students will be talking about sustainable and healthy food.
In Lampeter there are a range of workshops including how to make your own kimchi and sauerkraut as well as how to sprout seeds. Bee expert, Selwyn Runnett, will be introducing the amazing world of the Welsh honey bee.
During the week, former UWTSD student and INSPIRE Intern, Debby Mercher, will be hosing a weeklong interactive exhibition in the University鈥檚 Y Fforwm, Swansea, to explore the work of wool and at 4pm on Thursday will be holding a Wool, Sustainability and Felting workshop.
