Role in the University
Natalie MacDonald is a Principal Lecturer and Assistant Academic Director for Childhood, Youth, and Education at the ÃÜÌÒ´«Ã½. She is an active member of the Early Years Network in Wales, collaborating with third-sector and government organisations to enhance the quality of early childhood education.
Natalie’s research interests focus on the role of adults in play-based pedagogy, concept development, education policy, and professional learning. Currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education, her research explores the impact of early years education and care policies on practice.
Background
Natalie MacDonald brings a wealth of experience in early childhood education and care, having worked in both Flying Start non-maintained settings and schools. She has extensive experience supporting children and families from diverse backgrounds.
Natalie holds a degree in Law and a Master’s degree in Development and Therapeutic Play. She is currently completing her Doctorate in Education. Actively involved with leading organisations in the early education and care sector in Wales, both maintained and non-maintained, Natalie is dedicated to elevating the profile of early years education.

Academic Interests
Natalie MacDonald leads and teaches across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including supervising postgraduate research. Her areas of expertise include curriculum development, assessment, pedagogy and play, concept development, the role of adults in education, and education policy.
Research Interests
Natalie MacDonald is an experienced researcher skilled in both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. She has a particular interest in examining policy through Discourse Analysis and Enunciative Pragmatic Analysis. Natalie’s research primarily focuses on early years practice, especially within the non-maintained sector, as reflected in her academic publications and conference presentations.
Expertise
Natalie MacDonald serves on the Foundation Learning Advisory Group and represents higher education institutions on the Qualification Standards Advisory Group. These roles provide her with comprehensive insight into the early years sector and its future development needs. She has also contributed to Welsh Government working groups, developing early years enabling learning guidance for the New Curriculum for Wales and shaping the curriculum for the funded non-maintained sector.
Enterprise, Commercial, and Consultancy Activities.
- UWTSD Research Lead for the Welsh Government consultation on Assessment Arrangements for Funded Non-Maintained Nursery Settings.
- UWTSD Team Lead for the development of Welsh Government playlists and resources for the Curriculum for Funded Non-Maintained Nursery Settings.
- Coordinator and developer of bespoke professional learning for the early years and related sectors, including training on Attachment, Sustained Shared Thinking, and science through play in the Early Years.
- Organiser and workshop provider for the Early Years Matters Conference, held on 6th July 2016.
- Lead researcher for family and community engagement case studies, including interviews, focus groups, transcriptions, and case study development with schools.
- Lead for the Sustained Shared Thinking research team at UWTSD, overseeing ongoing research projects in this area.
