Project outline
The Future Theatres project brought together a multidisciplinary team—including ATiC, Cardiff University’s Clinical Innovation Accelerator (CIA), Cardiff University School of Architecture, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Cenin Renewables, Medtronic, Nuaire, and BIPVco—to design and build a sustainable, modular operating theatre. This pioneering initiative aimed to address the urgent need for environmentally responsible healthcare infrastructure in Wales.
The project united clinical theatre practitioners, architects, and sustainability experts to co-create a future-ready model that balances clinical functionality with environmental performance.

- Employed a mixed-method qualitative research approach, including workshops, focus groups, and hands-on interaction with analogue models, to gather insights from clinician end-users.
- Used these insights to inform the iterative development of virtual reality (VR) simulations, enabling real-time testing and evaluation of emerging architectural designs.
Impact:
This collaboration helped shape a sustainable, user-informed operating theatre model—supporting both clinical excellence and environmental responsibility.
