Research Interests
I have a broad interest in education, learning and teaching, online learning and offender learning; within the context of social exclusion issues such as perceptions of poverty, vulnerable and excluded groups and the role of media in stereotyping and prejudice. My research focuses on individuals and groups who are or at risk of exclusion by giving them a voice through personal narratives. Historically within ethnographic research there has been a tradition of hearing the âstories of people who occupy subordinate social positionsâ in society through the âdevelopment of personal narratives analysisâ; this allows for an understanding of how human agency and selfhood are constructed within a variety of contexts e.g. gender, class, education, disability and poverty (Maines et al, 2008). Research within this frame is far from a voyeuristic endeavour rather it aims to reveal knowledge and develop an understanding for the social actor and the researcher; this in turn allows for strategies for change to be considered. From this perspective my research explores subjective experience but at the same time seeks to understand the structures within which social actors live their lives (OâReilly, 2012). I have undertaken a range of research projects which have focused on:
- United National Rights of the Child
- Harmony and Sustainability
- Engaging at Risk Communities
- Adult Learners in HE and late diagnosis of SpLD
- Early education experience and its impact upon offender learning, adult offender learning within both probation and prison environments.
- Student perception of a primary education studies degree.
- Using technology enhanced learning and computer literacy with vulnerable groups and at HE.
- Audit of Welsh medium and bilingual early years provision for the Welsh language board.
- Children with a family member in prison.
- Bilingualism and babies: evaluative report to Welsh language board.
- Giving children and young people with a disability a voice.
- Raising Awareness and Changing Attitudes with Young People about Violence against Women and Domestic Abuse.
- Evaluation of the Co-creating Healthy Change Portfolio in Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan
- Do older (over 60 years) and younger (11-25 years) people talk about and perceive people who are poor differently? Are these opinions formed on the basis of different sources of information and experience?
- Student Attitudes towards the Role, function and Purpose of Health Care within the NHS.
