Graduating at UWTSD’s Carmarthen campus this year, Caitlin Jenkins not only completed her BA in Sociology but did so while overcoming immense personal tragedy - a journey that earned her two special awards recognising her resilience and commitment.

At the university’s 2025 graduation ceremony, Caitlin was honoured with the J E Mock Award for Endeavour and the Advocacy, Sociology, Equity and Diversity Prize, celebrating both her academic achievements and her personal strength.

Caitlin chose UWTSD Carmarthen for its welcoming atmosphere and beautiful surroundings, drawn to its supportive learning environment. “It seemed smaller than bigger universities and allowed me to gain the courage to enrol myself onto my desired course,” she said.

Her passion for sociology started in college and deepened through her degree. “I had previously studied this subject in college and really enjoyed the topic,” Caitlin said. “This course also gave me leeway with future career pathways, which later on gave me options if my interests were to change.”

Throughout her time at UWTSD, Caitlin aimed to broaden her understanding of sociology and its real-world relevance. One of the standout experiences of her degree was a work placement, which gave her a valuable insight into future career options and helped her connect theory to practice.

She said: “The highlights of this course were the people I met. I met so many amazing people and gained strong relationships with friends and tutors who were there every step of the way.”

Caitlin’s final year brought an unexpected and heartbreaking challenge - the passing of her sister. In the face of this loss, she remained committed to her studies. She shared: “This was a very difficult and challenging time but the moral support from my class and lecturers was a massive help to keep me going towards my end goal.”

That perseverance did not go unnoticed. The J E Mock Award for Endeavour recognises students who demonstrate exceptional determination, while the Advocacy, Sociology, Equity and Diversity Prize honours those who engage deeply with the values at the heart of sociology. Caitlin’s achievements reflect both.

As she celebrates her graduation, Caitlin is taking a well-earned moment to reflect. “My plans now are to savour the moment of pushing through my course and graduating,” she said. “This is a massive achievement and I look forward to putting my degree to good use in the future.

Caitlin is confident that her time at UWTSD has laid a strong foundation. “I’d definitely recommend this course to others. It doesn’t limit you to one specific career path and allows you to come away with so many important life lessons.”
