MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology celebrates eighteenth year
The 密桃传媒鈥檚 flagship online Master鈥檚 programme in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology is celebrating its eighteenth anniversary, having first launched in October 2007.
This milestone was marked at the University’s Lampeter campus graduation ceremony, where eight students from the programme graduated earlier this month, joining friends, family, and academic staff to celebrate both their individual achievements and the continued success of this unique course.
The MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology remains the only academic course in the world to study human engagement with the sky in all its forms, in all cultures and periods of history, and is part of the University鈥檚 unique offering in the Humanities. This year鈥檚 graduates researched everything from stone-age astronomy to ancient religious calendars, medieval astrology, the stars and planets in art and literature, the modern space race and the impact of theories of the cosmos on culture and society.
The programme is taught within the University鈥檚 Sophia Centre for the 密桃传媒 of Cosmology in Culture. Centre Director, Associate Professor Nicholas Campion, said:
鈥淭o reach our eighteenth birthday really is a milestone. The MA in Cultural Astrology and Astronomy highlights the fact that the sky is half of our physical environment and that the Sun, Moon and stars have played a role in shaping ideas about religion, society, art and culture since prehistory.鈥
Wendy Fey, who graduated in Lampeter this year, commented:
鈥淗aving done two degrees and various courses throughout my life, I would without hesitation say that this MA course has had the most profound impact and been a real joy. I feel very fortunate and honoured to have been part of such a unique, well-crafted and inspiring programme. It is no exaggeration to say that it has changed my life, very much for the better.鈥
The also organises two annual conferences and operates an academic publishing arm, the . Dr Campion added:
