The only undergraduate degree of its kind in the UK, the BA Adventure Filmmaking course challenges students to push creative and technical boundaries. In this latest project, students were tasked with producing short promotional films showcasing Nikon’s latest camera technology. As part of the collaboration, students participated in a hands-on workshop led by Nikon representatives and freelance filmmaker Bruno Murari, where they worked with cutting-edge mirrorless Z mount cameras, including the Z9, Zf, and even Nikon’s newest cinema lens, yet to be released to the public at the time.

Nikon’s Head of Education, Maja Zwolinska, and B2B and Equipment Specialist, Peter Alderson, guided students through the technical and creative possibilities of the equipment as they filmed action-packed sequences, including fitness training and skateboarding on campus.

Maja Zwolinska from Nikon said:

“We had a great time spending the day with a group of talented and passionate students, giving them the chance to explore Nikon equipment and take part in hands-on workshops. It was inspiring to connect with them, hear their views on the industry, and learn more about their creative approaches.

“As part of this collaboration, we introduced a creative brief that the students are currently working on, and it has been incredibly rewarding to support them from the very start of their journey. Their enthusiasm and commitment have been truly impressive, and we look forward to seeing the outcomes of their hard work.

“This partnership marks an important step in our ongoing dedication to nurturing emerging talent and fostering creativity. We are excited to continue building this relationship by offering students meaningful support and opportunities in the future.â€

Throughout the production process, students engaged directly with Nikon’s marketing team, pitching their film concepts and receiving valuable professional feedback. Nikon’s generous loan of approximately £15,000 worth of camera gear has played a key role in enabling the high-quality productions.

The collaboration will culminate with a screening of the completed films during Calon Y Daith – Heart of The Journey, the course’s annual end-of-year showcase, taking place at Yr Egin on May 15th. Nikon will once again provide feedback on the final work.

Adventure Filmmaking student Dan Philips added that the experience was:

“Working with Nikon on the workshop and throughout this module has been a brilliant experience - not only getting to connect with people form the brand but also having the chance to use a full range of their equipment, including some top of the line and recently released cameras and lenses. It was a valuable hands on opportunity to develop our skills and gain insight in to the industry. I’m really grateful to Brett and the university for organising it.â€

UWTSD’s Adventure Filmmaking Programme Manager Dr Brett Aggersberg said:

“This is an amazing opportunity for students to put their skills and knowledge to the test for a major company. Having your work seen by an internationally recognised brand such as Nikon is a unique and special experience. Then, having feedback, and such high praise for their ideas, made it something that is difficult to find on other courses. We have a lot of confidence in our students that they will achieve great things in this unique industry, and opportunities such as this help to propel them towards it at an accelerated rate.â€
