Title: Supporting Children Through Healthcare with PreMedPrep

Research Area: 3D Printing and Prototyping

Partner:  PreMedPrep (Adam Higgins, MSc Industrial Design, UWTSD)

PreMedPrep 1

Project outline

Adam Higgins, an MSc Industrial Design student at UWTSD, developed PreMedPrep—a range of products designed to help children prepare for common healthcare procedures such as blood tests, heart checks, temperature readings, and nebuliser treatments. At the time, no tailored tools existed to support children or healthcare providers in this space.

PreMedPrep uses bright, animal-themed designs to simulate medical procedures in a friendly, engaging way. These tools aim to reduce anxiety by helping children understand what to expect, making them more comfortable and engaged during treatment, improving the overall medical experience.

ATiC supported the development of PreMedPrep by conducting usability evaluations with both clinicians and children. These insights helped refine the designs and informed the creation of new 3D-printed prototypes for further testing and improvement.

  • Conducted product usability testing using behavioural observation and analysis systems.
  • Supported iterative design through rapid prototyping and 3D printing.

Impact:

This collaboration helped transform a student-led concept into a practical, child-friendly healthcare support tool with real-world impact.
