What you will learn

Our part-time MSc in Environmental Conservation and Management is built on a foundation of practical, real-world experience and critical analysis. Our teaching approach encourages you to engage directly with environmental issues, applying theoretical knowledge to hands-on projects and research to deepen your understanding and skills in conservation.

Year 1
In your first year, you will study foundational subjects in environmental conservation, such as ecology, biodiversity, and environmental impact assessment. You’ll gain insight into the ecological processes that sustain life on Earth and develop skills in assessing human impact on natural systems. Hands-on projects and fieldwork introduce essential conservation techniques and foster a practical understanding of environmental management principles.


Year 2
Year two focuses on advanced conservation methods and environmental policy analysis. You’ll delve deeper into managing ecosystems, wildlife, and habitats, with an emphasis on sustainable resource use and the influence of global policy on local conservation practices. Applied research and live case studies allow you to work on real-world issues, helping you refine your expertise and apply your skills effectively.

Year 3
In the final year, you’ll focus on a research project that addresses a specific conservation issue, guided by experienced faculty. This capstone project allows you to integrate and apply everything you’ve learned in a professional, research-driven environment. You’ll develop skills in project management, data analysis, and critical thinking, preparing you to make a meaningful impact in the environmental sector.

    • Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCert). This is the first part of the full Master’s degree.  

    Once you have successfully completed your PGCert studies, you will be eligible to progress for the remainder of the Master’s degree. â¶Ä¯&²Ô²ú²õ±è;

    These are ideal routes if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied this subject, or if you did not achieve the grades you need for a place on this degree. â¶Ä¯â€¯

    English language requirements â¶Ä¯ 

    If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests. â¶Ä¯&²Ô²ú²õ±è;

    If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa. â¶Ä¯&²Ô²ú²õ±è;

    For courses of more than six months’ duration you will require a Student visa. â¶Ä¯&²Ô²ú²õ±è;

    International students who require a Student visa should apply for our full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship. â¶Ä¯â€¯

    Please note students receiving US Federal Aid are only able to apply for in-person, on-campus programmes which will have no elements of online study. 

  • We believe that course content should involve the combined consideration of academic and vocational intent for students to develop a skill and knowledge set which is fit for the workplace. 

    Hence, this MSc was designed with environmental managers and applies current ‘live’ assessments/events to keep the content responsive to the ever-changing needs of employers, their employees, and the ever-changing environmental agenda. 

    This teaching style involves, reports, projects, presentations, and help students develop their individual interests within the module’s framework.

    Also, the dissertation is developed by students in collaboration with the supervisory team, and it is believed it should be directly relevant to the student’s interests while still complying with the academic rigour of MSc research. Finally, the teaching team are completely student-centred and believe in facilitating students in achieving their environmental management ambitions.

  • Some modules in this course are available to study through the medium of Welsh either fully or partially. In all cases students will be able to submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh. â¶Ä¯&²Ô²ú²õ±è;

    If you choose to study your course either fully or partially through the medium of Welsh, you may be eligible to apply for scholarships and bursaries to support you with your studies.  

    We are continuously reviewing our Welsh medium provision, the precise availability of modules will vary depending on staff availability and research interests, new topics of study, timetabling and student demand. Where your course offers modules available through the medium of Welsh this may vary from year to year, and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved.
