Project outline
RotoMedical, the medical division of the Rototherm Group, is a leading UK manufacturer of PPE, including face coverings, surgical masks, face shields, and goggles. As part of their product innovation strategy, RotoMedical developed a Clear Mask version of their R-Mask—featuring a transparent panel to improve visibility of the wearer’s mouth and enhance communication.
To support design validation, RotoMedical partnered with ATiC to evaluate whether the Clear Mask’s plastic panel affected airflow and thermal performance during use.

ATiC conducted an independent formative product evaluation to assess the thermal impact of the Clear Mask compared to the standard R-Mask.
´¡°Õ¾±°ä’s&²Ô²ú²õ±è;±ð³æ±è±ð°ù³Ù¾±²õ±ð:
- Used Infrared Thermography (IRT) to measure skin temperature at the sides of the face—adjacent to the mask edge—during wear.
- Analysed thermal data to determine whether the Clear Mask altered airflow patterns, potentially redirecting exhaled air to the sides and affecting comfort or performance.
Impact:
This collaboration provided RotoMedical with critical insights into the thermal and functional performance of their Clear Mask, supporting further refinement and validation of the product.
