A former student at the University’s Swansea College of Art, Ocean is an illustrator who works in both traditional and digital media as well as ceramics, fabrics and other crafts. She has created artwork for such titles as ‘You are Enough‘ by Jess Sanders, published by Affirm Press (2022) which won her the ‘Best in Design’ prize at the Australian Design Awards, and the Bartholomew Bear book series published by Jellycat. She also designs plush animal characters for Jellycat as well as designing, manufacturing and selling her own range of ceramics, jewellery, stationary and a whole range of merchandise. She has also authored and illustrated her own book ‘Archie my Dinosaur Friend’, published by Jellycat, which is now also a part of their animal character range.

Reflecting on the event, third-year illustration student Ellie Ball shared, “I have been a long-time admirer of Ocean’s work, so I was really looking forward to this event. Her presentation was really inspiring, and I also learned a lot from talking to her afterwards. I now feel much more confident about my career path following graduation.â€

This visit underscored UWTSD’s commitment to providing practical, industry-relevant experiences to its students, further cementing its reputation as a leading institution in this field.  Lecturer Ian Simmons expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It was fantastic to meet up with Ocean again. Her advice and expertise added tremendous value to our students’ learning experience, ensuring they are well-prepared to navigate the competitive landscape of freelance illustration.

Strong links with industry are fundamental to us at UWTSD and the institution continues to fortify these ties to benefit its students.  The students were treated to a wonderful presentation, and Q&A session, with one of the industry’s top children’s book illustrators. The fact that Ocean is also a graduate of Swansea College of Art added to the excitement and anticipation.  This visit is yet another example of UWTSD’s commitment to fostering creative talent and equipping students with the skills and confidence to succeed in their careers.â€
