A British Muslim woman of Pakistani heritage, Nazia’s passion for education was evident early on, but personal circumstances meant stepping away from formal studies after college. Still, her love of learning remained strong, nurtured through years of dedicated work as a support worker for vulnerable individuals.

After a long hiatus from education, Nazia found the right opportunity at the Ҵý (UWTSD’s) Birmingham campus enrolling in the BSc Health and Social Care programme and later progressing to an MSc in Public Health and Social Care. “I was passionate about deepening my knowledge and skills to serve others better,” she shared, adding that the courses offered the ideal mix of academic depth and real-world relevance.

Returning to education after 25 years wasn’t easy and Nazia has faced significant hurdles.

She said: “Pursuing my education was more than just an academic journey, it became a personal test of resilience. During a time when I was quietly facing significant health challenges, I chose to keep moving forward, driven by purpose and hope.

“That experience taught me not only the value of perseverance, but also the strength that can grow in silence. Each milestone I reached carried deeper meaning, and every success became a reminder that determination can thrive even in the most difficult seasons.

“At UWTSD, I’ve been honoured with four awards in recognition of my outstanding performance in modules and dissertations.”

Her determination never wavered. “I wanted to prove to myself that it’s never too late to follow your dreams,” she said. Her efforts were rewarded with distinction-level results in both degrees.

Among her many academic achievements, Nazia highlights the joy of engaging with meaningful research and the strong community of support she found at UWTSD. Her specialist work focused on critical issues in health and social care, giving her both the confidence and expertise to thrive in the field.

Nazia plans to continue making a positive impact within the health services sector. For those considering a similar path, she wholeheartedly recommends the programme: “It’s ideal for anyone passionate about health and social care and looking to develop skills that truly make a difference.”

Nazia Khan’s story is a testament to perseverance, proving that no matter the obstacles, it is always possible to transform your life and the lives of others through education.
