After the uncertainty brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, Matthew began re-evaluating his career path and found himself drawn to the idea of joining the police force. Learning that a Level 1 Professional Policing qualification was a necessary step, he began researching local options and found that UWTSD not only offered this entry-level qualification, but also a full BSc degree in Professional Policing.

鈥淭he idea of going to university in my thirties was admittedly a bit daunting,鈥 said Matthew, 鈥渂ut I was determined not to let that hold me back.鈥

UWTSD鈥檚 convenient city centre campus location and excellent facilities proved the perfect environment for Matthew to begin his academic journey.

From the outset, Matthew was impressed by the university鈥檚 structured and supportive approach. 鈥淔rom day one, we were introduced to the teaching staff, given our timetables, and had the entire academic year clearly explained. Communication was consistently excellent, and lecturers were always accessible, either in person or via email.鈥

One of the key strengths of the Professional Policing programme is its real-world relevance. Most lecturers come from former policing, military, or legal backgrounds, bringing invaluable experience into the classroom. Guest speakers, including private investigators, digital forensic experts, and frontline police officers, regularly enriched the learning experience with insights and lived perspectives that went far beyond the textbook.

As part of the course, students also took part in immersive field trips. A visit to Swansea Magistrates鈥 Court stood out for Matthew: 鈥淪peaking directly with a judge gave me insight into court proceedings that really helped with my end-of-year exams,鈥 he said.

Balancing life as a full-time student while working full-time night shifts at Amazon, Matthew鈥檚 path was not without its challenges. But with perseverance, determination, and strong support from UWTSD鈥檚 staff and student well-being services, he was able to excel.

鈥淭his achievement is the result of consistent hard work, attending lectures, submitting all assignments on time, and effective time management,鈥 said Matthew. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 be happier with the result.鈥

鈥淭o anyone thinking about a career in policing, I wholeheartedly recommend the Professional Policing degree at UWTSD. The academic year flies by, and with commitment and planning, you鈥檒l be amazed at what you can achieve.鈥
