Professor Gary R. Bunt Visits Indonesia to Deliver Key Lectures on Artificial Intelligence and Islam
ÃÜÌÒ´«Ã½ (UWTSD) is pleased to announce that Professor Gary R. Bunt recently completed a successful visit to Indonesia, where he delivered two significant lectures on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and Islam.

On his visit, Professor Bunt delivered a keynote lecture at Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia in Depok, West Java. His lecture, titled From Sheikh Google to ImamAI, was a part of the prestigious annual masterclass and workshop series on The Future of Artificial Intelligence in/and of Islam, organised by Leiden University and KITLV-Jakarta. The keynote addressed the evolving role of AI within Islamic contexts, exploring how digital technologies are reshaping religious practices and discourses.
In addition to the keynote, Professor Bunt participated in an international seminar on Islamic Digital Humanities hosted by Fakultas Dakwah UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten. This seminar featured collaboration with esteemed academic Prof. Bart Barendregt from Leiden University. During his presentation, Professor Bunt discussed themes from his recent book Islamic Algorithms, highlighted new research on AI, and shared insights from his ongoing research projects, including Digital British Islam and Digital Islam Across Europe. He also elaborated on his editorial contributions to the newly established Digital Muslim Review journal.
Reflecting on his visit, Professor Bunt stated, “This was a great opportunity to engage with scholars from Southeast Asia and Europe working at the cutting edge of academic work on the impact of digital technologies on Muslim societies. I look forward to further exploring potential future research opportunities to be made across diverse sectors in Indonesia.â€

He has authored several acclaimed books exploring the intersection of Islam, technology, and society, establishing himself as a leading voice in the field.
