A new exhibition of work entitled Solo Symphony by Professor Sue Williams can be viewed at TEN, a contemporary art gallery specialising in Welsh and Wales-based artists, in Cardiff this month.

A colourful, abstract painting of a woman hanging on a white studio wall.

Professor Williams is Programme Manager of Fine Art: Studio Site & Context at the ÃÜÌÒ´«Ã½â€™s (UWTSD) Swansea College of Art.

The exhibition features the latest body of mixed media paintings on canvas. Inspired by her recent gallery banner commission, it takes the form of a series of women spinning around poles, caught in the momentum of the moment.

There is also an opportunity to view videos made in collaboration with the composer David Bird and artist-writer Marilyn Allen. The visuals come from Professor Williams’ many paintings and drawings, flicking in ceaseless staccato, with snippets of conversations between Professor Williams and Allen as they frankly discuss their experiences of being a woman.

Professor Williams said: “In this exhibition, I explore the rich and complex frictions created between social media and real life. The overload of visuals and noises blur the boundaries, and reality and fantasy are playfully entangled, exploring misrepresentation and misinterpretation.

“I probe into sexual and cerebral relationships, the dysfunctional, gender communication and our dependency on social media where all aspects of human emotion, well-being, life, death, ego, and vulnerability lie, confronting the rich core of human behaviour and in turn exposing the darkness and the humour. I draw the viewer into a world of provocative sexual and emotional politics, unravelling the questions raised about the construction of identity in contemporary culture and the impact on our bodies and minds.â€

Professor Williams was born in Cornwall and has lived and made her career in Wales over the last twenty years. She is a prominent artist with a recognised body of work and an exhibition history of both solo and group shows on five continents.

In 2000 she was awarded Gold Medal for Fine Art at both the National Eisteddfod and the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation Award for painting. In 2006 she was one of eight shortlisted artists for the second biennial Artes Mundi prize.

Solo Symphony launches on Friday, September 13 and can be viewed until October 19.
