Gaurav Janakbhai Patel, an MSc Public Health and Social Care in Practice student who graduates from our London campus today, has turned his passion for medicine and innovation into impactful academic and professional contributions. 

A qualified doctor and lifelong learner, Gaurav joined UWTSD with the goal of expanding his knowledge beyond clinical medicine to address broader public health challenges.  

“I’ve always been committed to using my medical background to make a difference in the lives of communities,” he said. “That’s what led me to pursue a master’s in public health and social care. UWTSD, known for its forward-thinking approach in public health education, was my first choice.” 

The programme’s focus on practical application, policy analysis, and interdisciplinary learning made a lasting impact. “The course content was incredibly relevant to current global and national public health challenges,” said Gaurav. “It’s integration of social care within public health frameworks, alongside the chance to engage in meaningful research, was both timely and inspiring.” 

Throughout the course, Gaurav embraced the opportunity to combine academic learning with real-world applications. He credits UWTSD with nurturing his growth not just as a student, but as a researcher and innovator. “The university provided unwavering support, enabling me to explore the areas I’m passionate about, such as leadership, health promotion, and policy evaluation,” he said. 

One of the highlights of Gaurav’s academic journey was his involvement in research. He has completed seven research projects to date, three of which were undertaken during his studies at UWTSD. Two of these were selected for presentation at public health conferences hosted by Warwick University, Coventry, underscoring his growing reputation in applied public health research. 

Keen to give back, Gaurav is now working with the UWTSD Students’ Union to develop initiatives that will provide future students with hands-on research opportunities. “We’re collaborating on upcoming projects to ensure every student benefits from experiential research learning,” he said. 

Despite the demands of balancing intensive academic work with personal responsibilities, Gaurav navigated challenges with determination. “Time management and support from mentors were crucial,” he added. “The university’s resources and environment helped me thrive even during the most demanding periods.” 

Gaurav now plans to pursue a role within the NHS as a public health policymaker or practitioner. His long-term goal is to contribute to evidence-based, socially responsive national health strategies that tackle healthcare inequalities and improve population outcomes. 

“I would highly recommend the MSc in Public Health and Social Care in Practice at UWTSD to anyone looking for a rigorous, practice-oriented education,” he said. “It’s particularly valuable for professionals from clinical backgrounds who want to transition into policy, research, or public health administration.”
