What you will learn

Our philosophy is to provide a rigorous and flexible learning environment that empowers students to engage deeply with Latin language and literature. We prioritise personal growth, academic excellence, and the development of independent research skills, enabling you to tailor your studies to your linguistic abilities and intellectual interests.

This one-year PGCert (60 credit) programme focuses on the acquisition and development of Latin at your chosen level—beginner, intermediate, or advanced. You will engage with classical texts, explore specialised themes such as Latin epic or love poetry, and build essential research skills through the Theory and Methodology for the ÃÜÌÒ´«Ã½ of the Ancient World module. The programme is structured to provide a firm foundation in Latin language and literature, supporting academic, professional, or personal aspirations.

Some modules are run on alternative years on a Year A/B system. You may also study for a PG Diploma (120 credits) or MA (180 credits, including a 60-credit dissertation).

    English language requirements â¶Ä¯ 

    If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests. â¶Ä¯&²Ô²ú²õ±è;

    If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa. â¶Ä¯&²Ô²ú²õ±è;

    Please note students receiving US Federal Aid are only able to apply for in-person, on-campus programmes which will have no elements of online study.

    We also provide a variety of opportunities to learn and develop your Welsh language skills. â¶Ä¯â€¯&²Ô²ú²õ±è;

  • Our language degrees in Latin involve a wide range of assessment methods. In addition to traditional essays and exams, you will be assessed through commentaries and in-class tests. This variety of assessment helps develop skills in presenting material in clear, professional and a lucid manner, whether orally or in writing.

    Many language modules include an examination; examination arrangements are communicated to distance learners by the UWTSD Registry, and distance learners can ask for the support of the tutors in making arrangements for examinations.

  • There will be no mandatory additional costs to study beyond the payment of tuition. Students should be prepared to incur the basic costs associated with study such as transport and may wish to purchase coffees, snacks or other sundry items on campus.

    Many students also choose to invest in study support tools such as laptops over the course of their study, though this is not a programme requirement. Any activities related to study or student life which bear a cost beyond tuition will be optional, and the expense shall be clearly communicated to students at the time of registration.

  • Latin (MA) provides a strong foundation for postgraduate work, particularly for those interested in working on Latin language or linguistics. Many students study for the PG Certificate or Diploma in Latin in advance of undertaking a PhD in Classics.

    The course also provides a professional qualification for teachers or others seeking Continuing Professional Development.
