Role in the University
- Programme Director - Motorcycle Engineering
- Director of Studies for PhD students
Background
Born and educated in South Wales, Owen obtained his BSc in Particle Physics and Cosmology at Swansea University. He carried out his Master’s in Research at the Materials Engineering department at Swansea University, staying to obtain a PhD in material physics with EPSRC funding and support from the nuclear power industry; As well as racing motorcycles, playing in a rock band and surfing too much.
Owen then got a proper job (sort of) and spent 9 years as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Automotive Engineering, developing the Motorcycle Engineering programme and heading up the Composite Research Group, working with a specific interest in studying the application of structural composite to high performance motorcycles. After a brief stint as Head of School, Owen stood down to concentrate on all things motorcycle.
Owen’s main areas of expertise these days are in motorcycle dynamics where he heads a small research group studying the influence of rider inputs on vehicle response, working with advanced data measurement platforms on super bikes and trying to develop an accurate vehicle simulation platform for motorcycles.
As well as this, Owen has an interest (and significant teaching load) on the development and simulation of the ICE, with particular interest in the combustion of hydrogen as a viable alternative to BEV technology for motorcycle applications. Much of this work involves simulation with Ricardo WAVE and Ansys Forte for accurate engine simulation and chemical kinetics. Owen never has sufficient cpu cores!
