Year 1
Year 1 focuses on understanding the foundations of physical literacy and physical activity, emphasizing their role in promoting health and wellbeing across life stages. Through evidence-based modules, you’ll explore personal philosophies, curriculum development, and leadership strategies, gaining reflective skills to assess and improve physical education practices in schools and communities.
Year 2
Building on Year 1, you will delve into advanced concepts, including the critical evaluation of research-informed teaching and evidence-based practices. Emphasis is placed on investigating how curriculum development and community initiatives impact pupil outcomes. You will begin crafting your dissertation, integrating theoretical knowledge with real-world applications.
Year 3
Year 3 centres on completing your dissertation, supported by expert tutors from the Wales Institute for Physical Literacy. This stage enhances your ability to lead and innovate in PE and physical literacy, equipping you to design and implement transformative practices. You’ll emerge with a robust skill set, ready to drive positive change in education and health sectors.

Alternative entry routes
- Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCert). This is the first part of the full Master’s degree.
Once you have successfully completed your PGCert studies, you will be eligible to progress for the remainder of the Master’s degree.
These are ideal routes if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied this subject, or if you did not achieve the grades you need for a place on this degree.

English language requirements
If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa.
For courses of more than six months’ duration you will require a Student visa.
International students who require a Student visa should apply for our full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship.

Assessments are varied to enable students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding in a variety of ways. These include seminar papers and presentations, essays, video analysis and oral lab exam, reflective journal and blogging.

Some modules in this course are available to study through the medium of Welsh either fully or partially. In all cases students will be able to submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.
